Kuttanad
Located across the districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta, Kuttanad is one of the few places in the world where farming is practiced below sea level—about 2 to 3 meters beneath. This unique geography has shaped a landscape of reclaimed paddy fields, locally known as padasekharams, bordered by bunds and canals that form part of Kerala’s vast backwater network.
The region is a visual symphony of green and gold, with paddy fields that change color with the seasons—lush green during monsoon and golden yellow in winter. These fields stretch along the banks of Vembanad Lake, the longest lake in India, offering breathtaking views and a sense of timeless rural charm.
